Paul Simon Opens Up About Hearing Loss and Unlikely Return to Live Performances

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, iconic singer-songwriter Paul Simon, aged 81, revealed that his return to live performances is highly unlikely due to a significant loss of hearing he experienced while working on his latest album, Seven Psalms. The unexpected decline in his left ear’s hearing capacity has presented numerous challenges, making everything more difficult for him. Simon expressed his initial reaction as one of frustration and annoyance, hoping that the issue would resolve itself, but unfortunately, his hearing has yet to be restored. This hearing loss is just one of several health struggles the artist has faced in recent years.

Reflecting on the passing of fellow musical luminaries, Simon acknowledges the changing tide and the reality of his generation’s age. He mentioned the recent deaths of Gordon Lightfoot earlier this month and Jeff Beck in January, emphasizing that his generation’s time has come. However, reaching his 80s has also brought the freedom to focus solely on pursuing endeavors that inspire him. As a result, he has chosen to avoid performing certain songs from his past, only singing those that genuinely resonate with him. Simon cited the example of occasionally feeling like a cover band during performances of “You Can Call Me Al,” prompting him to question his artistic direction and consider stepping away from touring.

Fortunately, Simon has found contentment in his personal life. He currently resides on a spacious ranch in Texas alongside his wife, musician Edie Brickell. He expressed his happiness in this idyllic setting and showed no particular desire to return to his East Coast roots. Instead, he finds solace in staying away from cold weather, preferring to spend winters in Hawaii, where he owns a house.
